Taylor Gee is an up and coming versatile rapper/singer/songwriter hailing from Fairbanks, Alaska. But Fairbanks isn’t the only place she’s called home. Taylor credits her unique musical style to being exposed to all different types of cultures while living in California, Iowa, Kentucky and Illinois while her father was in the military. Music has always been an integral part of Taylor’s life, as evidenced by her first memory, “I’ve been singing since I could talk”, Taylor recounts,”I remember being in my car seat in the car and singing along with the radio. It’s always been something that’s came naturally to me.”
Taylor found her voice in grade school while singing in the choir and being told to tone her voice down, as her’s overpowered the others. She started writing her own songs and raps in highschool and joined a local record label in Iowa her senior year. She describes her first experience in the studio as, “when the magic happened”, reveling in the ability to take a lyric and turn it into an entire song. She moved back to Alaska in 2015 to be with her family, and did music independently on her own before being invited to do an all female rap showcase in Anchorage. That event is where she met Mystro and Killa, the men behind UNBREAKABLE, and was invited to come and record with them. The rest is history. She has went on to win several categories in the Alaska Hip Hop Awards this year, including Rookie of the Year, Best Female Rapper and Best Female Vocalist.
Taylor’s style is described by her peers as, “ever evolving, versatile, unique and intent on being the total package”. She credits her musical influences to Frank Ocean, Lil Kim, Ella Mai, Kehlani and Remy Ma. Taylor also fronts the movement of “Takeover”, which encourages people to take over their life and go after what they want. When asked what she wants people to know about her she keeps it pretty simple, “I’m just a blasian girl, who loves to sing and rap, and I love Kim Chi. Watch the scene for me, cause I’m going places.”
